How to Choose a Web Design Company in Pune (2026 Buyer's Guide)
A buyer's framework for evaluating web design companies in Pune - 12 questions that separate engineers from resellers, red flags, and how to compare quotes fairly.
Pune has hundreds of web design companies. Most of them publish the same three claims on their homepage: custom design, affordable pricing, and on-time delivery. None of those are verifiable. All three are equally true of a company that will hand you a template with your logo on it.
This guide is the framework we would use to evaluate ourselves. It works regardless of which company you eventually hire, including us.
The Problem With “Web Design Company in Pune”
The head keyword is saturated. IKF claims 1,500 clients across 25 years. Dimakh claims 1,500 designs over two decades. Savit, SPEORA, Awrange, Lets Webify, Pune Web Design - each with hundreds of projects and templated testimonials.
Most of that content follows an identical structure: a services list, a portfolio gallery, three client quotes, and a contact form. None of it answers the question you actually have, which is which of these will build something that works for my business.
The purpose of this article is different. It is a framework for evaluating any vendor, in any city.
What You Are Actually Buying
Before comparing quotes, be clear on what a website is for. Almost every “web design package” is really one of four different products, and vendors quote them at similar prices.
| Product | What it is | Realistic Pune price | Typical failure | |---|---|---|---| | Brochure site | Marketing pages, no data | ₹20,000 - ₹60,000 | Looks good, generates nothing | | Lead capture site | Marketing pages + forms + CRM routing | ₹30,000 - ₹90,000 | Forms fill but nobody follows up | | Content platform | Blog, resources, guides, comparison pages | ₹50,000 - ₹1,50,000 | Nobody can publish without a developer | | Web application | Login, database, workflows, integrations | ₹1,50,000+ | Scope creep, security gaps, never ships |
A ₹4,00,000 quote for a 6-page brochure site is not a premium quote. It is a mis-scoped one, or an invoice you will pay twice.
The 12 Questions
About architecture
1. Which framework, which version, and what will the source look like in three years? You want a named framework and a version. Astro, Next.js, React, plain HTML with a build step. If the answer is “we use modern technology” or “WordPress,” press further. WordPress is a legitimate answer for content-heavy sites - but then ask what the plugin count is, because plugins are where performance dies.
2. What JavaScript does the visitor actually download? A good answer is a specific number. Astro ships zero JavaScript by default. Next.js ships 85-250KB. WordPress ships whatever your theme and plugins add. Field data shows Astro-based sites pass Core Web Vitals on 48% of the web versus 29.3% for Next.js - so this question has a measurable consequence.
3. Do I own the source code, and in what form? A repository I can clone, or a database export plus a content export. Not “you get access to our account.” If you cannot leave with the code, you are renting a website.
About performance
4. What are your target Core Web Vitals on a mid-range Android phone? The correct thresholds are LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1 at the 75th percentile. If they cannot name the numbers, they are not measuring.
5. What hosting will you use, and where? Cheap shared hosting is the single most common avoidable cause of ranking damage. A managed host with a CDN costs more per month and typically costs less per year in lost enquiries. Ask whether hosting is inside the build price or billed separately - and for how long.
About design
6. Can I see a site you built that is live right now? Not a portfolio mockup. A live URL you can visit. Then actually look at it on your phone, click every form, and try to find something broken.
7. Where did the design come from - a template or from scratch? Either answer is fine if it is honest. The dishonest answer is claiming custom while delivering a purchased theme with restyled colours.
8. Will I be able to edit the text and images myself? For a brochure site, yes, and you should insist on it. For a custom web application, no, and that is fine. But find out before launch, not after.
About process and commercial terms
9. Who exactly will write the code, and will I talk to them? The account-manager structure is the default in this market and it is the single biggest source of cost and delay. If a salesperson and a project manager sit between you and the developer, you are paying for their salaries.
10. What is the fixed price, and what triggers a change order? A real vendor will tell you both. If the quote is “from ₹X,” you have not received a price.
11. What happens at 11pm when something breaks? Who is on call, what does the contract say, and what is excluded. Ask them to put it in writing rather than reassuring you verbally.
12. What does post-launch support include, for how long? Our own standard is 30 days of staging assurance. Anything longer should be scoped. Anything shorter should raise a question about what they expect to go wrong.
Red Flags
The portfolio has no live links. Screenshot grids of designs that are not online. Ask why.
“Unlimited revisions.” There is no such thing. It means nobody agreed what done looks like.
SEO sold as an add-on after launch. Technical foundations belong in the build. Selling you on-page SEO after your site is live means they skipped it the first time.
No one asked about your business. If the discovery process never touches how you actually make money, the site is decoration.
A quote significantly below market. A ₹8,000 custom build for a business that needs a login, a database, and a payment flow will become a ₹80,000 rescue project. This is the most common pattern we see in Pune.
They cannot answer what happens if you leave. That reveals whether the project is a deliverable or a subscription.
How to Compare Quotes Fairly
Get three quotes. Then normalise them before comparing:
- Strip out what you do not need. A quote including a logo, 50 pages, and 5 years of hosting is not comparable to one covering 6 pages and a CMS.
- Check what is excluded. Hosting, domain, SSL, maintenance, content, images, and post-launch support are the five lines most often hidden.
- Separate build from run. Build is a one-time cost. Run is annual and recurring. Over three years the run cost usually exceeds the build. A $1,299 build with a $300/month care plan costs $13,300 - the build was 19% of it.
- Ask each to state their assumption about scope in writing. Comparing written assumptions is comparing intentions. Comparing prices alone is comparing nothing.
What to Do If You Are in a Hurry
A reasonable fallback when you cannot evaluate properly: hire the vendor with the smallest realistic scope. A well-built 5-page site you can actually maintain beats a 20-page site you will not update.
Most Pune businesses can launch effectively on:
- A static or Astro-based marketing site
- A form that routes to WhatsApp and email
- LocalBusiness and Service structured data
- A maintained Google Business Profile
That covers the majority of what a small business needs and costs a fraction of a full custom build. You can add complexity once you know what customers actually use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a website design company in Pune charge? ₹20,000-₹60,000 for a professional 5-10 page site. ₹15,000-₹30,000 for a template build. Above ₹1,50,000 you are buying custom functionality, not design. Our full Pune website cost breakdown covers what each tier buys.
Is the cheapest quote worth it? Sometimes. It is worth it when the scope genuinely matches your needs - a 5-page service site with no database. It is not worth it when the quote assumes things you did not ask for. See what AI genuinely cut from pricing.
Should I choose WordPress or a custom build? WordPress for content-heavy sites where a non-technical person must publish. Custom for anything with login, data, payments, or integrations. The Astro versus Next.js comparison covers the modern framework options.
How do I know a Pune agency is legitimate? Ask for three live client URLs, then check them. Check the company registration, ask for a fixed quote with written scope, and confirm you will own the source code. Anyone legitimate answers these immediately.
Do I need a local agency in Pune? Location matters less than communication overlap and whether you can reach the person writing the code. Plenty of Pune clients work with distributed teams. Being in Pune helps with on-site meetings and local trust, nothing more.
What is the most common mistake Pune businesses make with websites? Paying for scope they cannot use, then having nothing left for maintenance. Ongoing costs run ₹15,000-₹40,000 per year. Businesses that budgeted only for the build discover this in month eight.
The agencies competing for “web design company in Pune” all publish claims. Only one of two things is verifiable: the work, or the price. Ask for the first in writing and the second in writing, and most of the noise disappears.
